Typewriter for flash of the week.

A flash story, also known as flash fiction or a flash essay, is a very short story, typically under 1,000 words, that attempts to convey a complete plot, even if it's done with a minimal amount of words. Despite their brevity, flashes seek to contain the main elements of a plot, including character, setting, conflict, and resolution.

Flash of the Week is a form of practice writing that helps me sharpen my skills by creating a story based on a prompt. Using Complete the Story as the prompt generator, I intend to publish a weekly flash story.

The first flash story, "Julie," was written in the summer of 2021 when the writing group I am a part of, "Coffee Club," was just getting started. It comes in under 150 words, generally around a third to a quarter of the size of most of the future Flash of the Weeks.

No matter what direction my ultimate writing direction takes me, I will make two promises to my readers:

  1. Flash of the Week will always be free to read

  2. Flash of the Week will always be open for readers to share their comments
